"For the last week or two weeks they had planned to kill the victim and make it look like a burglary or an accident," said sheriff's Sgt. Glenn Evers. The children used their father's gun, which they had taken several days before the slaying, Evers said. A neighbor called 911 to report the shooting after one of the children went to the neighbor's home. The neighbor said the children claimed they were playing with the gun when it went off accidentally. The children ran away when the neighbor called 911 but were found Thursday in the woods a few miles from their home. Prosecutors will decide what degree of murder the children will be charged with and whether they can be tried as adults. "I'm amazed," Evers said. (January 7, 2000 3:26 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) -- A 13-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother shot their father's girlfriend to death because they thought she was stealing their father, authorities said. Cathy Jones and Curtis Fairchild were charged with killing Sonya Nicole Speights, 29, a teaching assistant at a junior high school. She was shot in the chest and found dead Wednesday in the master bedroom at their home. Investigators said the youngsters confessed to the crime. |
