CENSORSHIP
1996 - 2002
"Censorship of anything, at any time, in any place, on whatever pretense, has always been and always will be the last cowardly resort of the boob and the bigot."
- Eugene O'Neill

We live in oppressive times. We have, as a nation, become our own thought police; but instead of calling the process by which we limit our expression of dissent and wonder "censorship," we call it "concern for commercial viability."
- David Mamet

Take a stand and strip away the red, white and blue blindfold of ignorance that so many Americans so proudly wear. Take a chance and make a difference! Here are some of the individuals and organizations that are working hard to make a change.

Parents who are dealing with the net for the first time may feel apprehensive. To help ease you into some of the parenting tasks that go along with the net, go to the VTW guide to Internet Parenting page.

You can also monitor what your child sees, instead of asking the government to do it for you by checking out these sites with special blocking software.

  • SurfWatch Software SurfWatch was the first software product which blocked sexually explicit material on the Internet.
But be warned...most of the site blockers you'll find will block patently inoffensive materials and items that could possibly be of interest to youngsters. I've heard that some blocking software actually blocks religious sites because they fall into the censorship categories the software looks for.

The Censorware Project was formed by a group of writers and net.activists in late 1997. Their goal is to bring to light information about censorware products which is, by their nature, hidden.

As always, commentary is encouraged. I love talking with people about this issue, so send me mail if you'd like to voice your opinion...
