I wake from a dream
to the tears on my face
overcome with emotion
and a melancholy emptiness

It happens from time to time
uncontrollable
inconvenient
painful

It sometimes feels like
my soul is being ripped
cut open
left to bleed anguish
and remorse

Sometimes for no reason
other than an off day
or a lost item of value
and yet it slices
through my being
cleaving me in two

The ups and downs
get better and worse
but they're never predictable
always damaging

I sometimes feel a sense
of great loss
a yawning emptiness
that gapes before me
taking my peace
and my contentment

I feel it at the edges
of my daily life
biding it's time
waiting to drench me
with tears and sadness

Sometimes it's all I can do
to keep it at bay
So it doesn't destroy me
entirely
