Why is it
that whenever I reach out
whenever I need
a steady hand
there's nobody there
to catch me
to hold me?

I am surrounded
by friends
and loved ones
and still I feel
as if I'm being
neglected somehow
terribly alone
as I sit
huddled in the darkness

It is a failing, I think
perhaps something
inside me
that I should change
or fix
so that I no longer looked
for this
external support

But how?
I feel so
damned petty
so stupid and silly
whenever this happens I know it's only
temporary
a frustrating
bump in the road
that I seem
to keep hitting
over and over

It should be enough
I think
the voices
the gentle caresses
of those
that watch over me
spirited hands
that slide
through my soul
never touching my skin
providing that true comfort
that I seem to need
so damned badly

A human animal still
I long to be held
caressed
loved, and told
that it'll be alright
when the morning comes

And still
it's not enough

I find myself wondering
if it ever will be.
