| To Buffy,
or not to Buffy?
11.23.98 Ok...I admit it. I'm a fan of teen angst. I don't know exactly when this occurred, but it seems to have happened very suddenly, like a slap to the back of the head. My unusual fascination seems to have sprung from the initial realization that my teen years sucked to the n-th degree, and therefore because I was the person that I was, I never got to do the "normal" teen thing. Sure, there was plenty of angst, but there was no real reward. No shit, you say... I know...But for some reason, when I hear other people talk about their childhoods (ok, so this is a teensy segment of the population) they ruminate on how marvelous it all was. What up with that? My childhood sucked! I can't remember a time in which it didn't suck. Sure, there were small snippets of time that, if taken seperately from the whole, didn't suck. Unfortunately, when blended with the rest of the experience of growing up, it just looks like one big suckfest in a blender turned on puree. Why am I bitching? Well, it could have something to do with the fact that there are many people alive today that aren't aware that people like me actually exist, have valid thoughts and ideas, and actually contribute to society. It's very odd. I'm this wacky overbearing force of nature to most people, and I really lead the most sedate of lifestyles...in my opinion. I could be doing much more... But, onward to the meat of the article. Teen angst. I'm COMPLETELY taken with the new series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on WB. I liked the original movie, but I actually like the show much more. The overtones are much more sinister. Alas, I've also fallen victim to watching shows like *GASP!* Dawson's Creek and Felicity (although I really don't know why...she's the most annoying indecisive chick on the face of the planet). I can't quite figure out why the hell I watch the other two programs, but Buffy is the shit. I remember my mom talking about running home from school every day to watch Dark Shadows when she was growing up, and at the time I was growing up, there was really nothing like that. No dark brooding undead characters to make my daily life more interesting...only wierd trippy crap like Lancelot Link - Secret Chimp, anything by Syd and Marty Kroft (you know...Dr. Shrinker, and Electro Woman and Dynagirl) , The Bugaloos *cringe*, and high "comedic morality plays" like The Brady Bunch, Gilligans Island, and the old '66 version of Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward. Not a supernatural bone in the bunch...even counting the episode of the Brady Bunch where they go to Hawaii and incur the wrath of that annoying vengeful Tiki God. The closest thing was the Groovy Ghoulies and I'd wait forever for something kinda scary to happen, only to have my little hopes dashed forever upon the rocks of the baseline entertainment at the time. I guess that's why, on every tuesday, I park my butt in front of the Cathode Ray Tube and giggle hysterically for an hour. Ah...the wacky hijinks of Giles getting knocked on his ass in a most un-british manner, Buffy's somewhat dorky retorts, Xander's "Deep Thoughts" moments, Willow and Oz bein' themselves, and - my favorite - Angel. I really wish they'd give him more dialogue, but I guess that'll be remedied with his new series. I've grown to love the characters that Joss Whedon's created. With Buffy, it's more of an "honoring" of the wonderful writing skills and the amazing storyline that smashes all boundaries. However, as to my predilection for watching Dawson's Creek and Felicity, maybe it's like heroin, only your pusher is the TV set. I just can't look away when it's on. It's like a car wreck. Kinda like Teletubbies. But that's a
