The Great Prostitution Debate
1996 - 2004
"The traditional practice of dealing with prostitution as a law and order issue is costly and simply does not work. The Task Force creates a forum in which everyone who is impacted in whatever way by prostitution can sit together and come up with solutions that work for San Francisco."

Terence Hallinan, San Francisco Supervisor/Sponsor of Prostitution Task Force

Ok...I've just had a precursory glance at some of the anti-prostitution laws in the state of Virginia and all across this great land of ours, the "necessary apropriation" for one law in particular equalled the sum total of $250,000, and I've had this great idea. Why bother? Where prostitution is concerned, I guess you could say that I agree with George Carlin's pretext of "Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?". I agree completely. I fail to understand why something that's usually done behind closed doors, makes the people involved VERY happy (at least momentarily), and usually harms NOBODY is such a BIG concern.

I'm not the type of person that particularly wants to give somebody (be it man or woman) several hundred dollars for what is basically a mechanical act if you're not involved with that person, but I fail to see why this shouldn't be legal. In some ways, I think prostitution is very helpful...It eases the urge in some of the people that would probably go out and commit atrocities against women and little girls, and in some cases probably keeps them from doing it. Think about it. We take sex for granted when we have it, but when it's not readily available, we as individuals start to feel neglected and unwanted. I know that going to a prostitute is a temporary fix, but at least it takes that "edge" off. There are many women out there who are unable to find themselves wanting to do anything else, and really...if you're good at something, why not make money off it?

Then there are the pimps...horrid little men that treat women like cattle, thrusting them into the most undesirable of situations. Sure he/she beats you, and takes away every shred of dignity that you ever had, but at least it's better than fending for yourself in this dangerous world. If you're working on your own and one of your clients decides he doesn't want to pay you, what's to keep him from killing you? Nobody knows where you are, and nobody's around to defend you from such attacks.

Also, there are no clinical limits on prostitution because of it's illegality, and thus you have walking DISEASE FACTORIES earning a chunk of change here and there, spreading HIV, Herpes, Syph and various other "not so fresh feeling" diseases. Legalizing and imposing cleanliness restrictions and possibly taxation on the trade would help to limit the harm and the germ factor. These women wouldn't feel so victimized and used. Who knows, someday the profession might be seen as a boon instead of an activity nobody wants to acknowledge in polite company.

I've seen some of the men that cruise the red light districts in various cities, and believe me, those women EARN their money the hard way EVERY night. If you can have sex with a stranger and have no real adverse emotional effects, I say go for it. I'm behind you all the way. Hopefully more people in this country will become enlightened someday and realise that there are much bigger problems in the world to tackle then the mere folly of hauling hard working women before the court so that the government can take more of my hard earned tax dollars to prosecute them.

Magna Carta for Sex Work

BELIEVING that LIBERTY was to have been the sweetest fruit of INDEPENDENCE;

DESPONDENT because adults are daily being arrested, fined, and jailed by reason of engaging in commercial sex with other consenting adults, or facilitating such behavior;

ASSERTING that commercial sex is demeaning only when an intolerant and puritanical society defines it to be so, and makes it a crime;

REJOICING that homosexuality, which was once considered a perversion and a crime, today is generally viewed with tolerance and respect; and that those who, in the past, oppressed homosexuals are now remembered with scorn; and those who today oppress them are considered malevolent;

UNDERSTANDING that there is a legitimate state interest in reducing the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, and that this can be better accomplished by the regulation of commercial sex than by its proscription;

EMBOLDENED by the belief that the toleration of prostitution is the cause of LIBERTY, that it is the cause of HAPPINESS, and that it is a cause with SEX APPEAL;

BE IT RESOLVED therefore that every June 9th (6/9) , is declared to be, and henceforth shall be observed as, END SEXUAL OPPRESSION DAY; and that CONSEQUENTLY, those who understand this to be so, and are in accord with this sentiment, shall, on every June 9th, petition their local government to

Cease and Desist

in the persecution of adults for engaging in commercial sexual activity with other consenting adults, or facilitating such activity, until such activity is nowhere a crime in The United States of America.
