it sucks to realize that you're imperfect, and that we all make the same
mistakes.
Sure...we'd like to reassure ourselves that this might not be the case...usually it's called denial, but when you actually get to the point where you realize that things in your life are totally fucked up, and maybe...just maybe...it's not everybody else's fault, it's time to re-evaluate your line of thinking. In my opinion, it's the wise person that can realize, and take in stride, the fact that most of the things that happen to them are not entirely out of their realm of control. Most of the problems that we have, we bring on ourselves, whether it's through ignorance or refusal to see what's directly in front of us. It takes a long time to own up to this rather abrupt psychological slap that life deals us, but once it's upon you, it's undeniable (to a point). You can, of course, choose to deny it and thus become an utter asshole/sociopath/societal gimp, but the truly strong and wise get past this, get over themselves, and become generally decent folk. This is where you begin to live, instead of simply existing. You begin to sense a higher purpose in life, and you start to respect the feelings and boundaries of other people around you. Yeah, the saying "Why can't we all just get along" does sound rather sappy and stupid, but the real reason behind it is rather dark and un-appealing. Most of humanity can't seem to let go of the petty differences, jealousies, and anger that incite them to hate, rage or hurt. Lots of people just feel out of control if everything around them isn't in it's proper place. If we could just give this notion up, and live our own lives, instead of trying to force those around us into the molds of people that we're comfortable with, maybe we could all "just get along"...Tolerance, baby. That's the name of the game. A little graciousness goes a long way, and in the end, you gain respect and trust. Not too shabby a goal to work towards, eh?
