Man...it's been awhile since I wrote a rant, and I feel one comin' on... Just what is up with sports anyway? Now I hear that Basketball isn't going to be played because of monetary disputes or some such nonsense. Don't these people make enough fucking money? I mean, this is RIDICULOUS! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to put a ball in a hole, hit a ball with a bat, or carry a ball through a bunch of oversized steroid junkies. I'm not saying that these people don't have viable talents, but why the HELL is sports one of the highest paying fields available? 

It's not like they're doing anything to further the cause of humanity like discovering a cure for aids/cancer/hepatitis, or directly helping kids learn to fend for themselves in today's nasty world. It is my opinion that the highest paying professions should be teaching, public service, and generally doing something to promote the common good of the people around you. Instead, we've become a society of "Me first!" assholes that grab at any possible cash that comes their way, no matter who it hurts, or what the source is. Nobody cares about helping anybody else because it doesn't pay. 

Wouldn't it be cool if teachers were the highest paid people in the country? Maybe that would help to assure that the youth of tomorrow would be able to read a stopsign by the age of 10 or 15. I'm sure once the money changed to another profession, you'd still have criminal assholes getting into it just to get paid, but I think that's going to happen with any industry that the money gets transferred to. It's human nature... 

Beefing up education should be the most important thing that we as a society do. Actual education about life, and what you can expect to happen to you should you get pregnant, get married too young, do drugs, or kill somebody would help kids make INFORMED choices about their future instead of relegating them to a life of dumb ass scare tactics in anti-drug/sex/abortion commercials and the talks that you get from your parents and guidance counselors. 

In my opinion, History should be the most exciting subject in school. Everybody remembers the old adage "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it", but who really pays attention to it enough to read up about our ancestors? 

As for people that serve the common good, they get spat at, yelled at, have things thrown at them, and even get targeted by violence fueled idiots that have nothing better to do than kill somebody who happens to be working in the wrong place at the wrong time. Firemen, Emergency Medical Technicians and the like usually have to call around the neighborhood every year to get funding to help buy new equipment or new housing for their vehicles and gear because people only seem to want to pay them when there's an emergency. And some people are too damn cheap to even do that! Some of these hard working public service people have to work with substandard equipment most of the time. Then the public gets all pissed at them because they weren't able to do their job completely.

It'd be nice to live in a society that treasured these people and paid them what they're worth. Saving a human life whether it's through teaching that there's hope and a way to pull themselves through life, or running into a burning building to save a child, should always be the most important things on our minds... 

We've concentrated on entertaining ourselves so that the constant blow by blow of daily life doesn't get to us so much anymore...but at what cost?
